Chapter 1

Practice: The Read

Two practices for the barn, two for the office or home. Write one line after each: what improved today was.

20 minPracticeBarn and office

The same work in two rooms. If you have no horse, watch horses at a fence or at a lesson; seeing is practice too. Do the office practices this week, with real people, at low volume.

Barn: Two reads
HowBefore you halter, read the horse for one full minute: weight, eye, ears, breath. Decide whether today he needs you to stop arriving or to give him a clear question.
You've got it whenYou can say which, and why, before you touched the rope.
Barn: Lean on the rail
HowSpend ten minutes near a horse with no plan and no ask. Watch for the first time he checks in on his own.
You've got it whenYou saw a check in you did not ask for.
Office: The two names
HowList two people you lead. For each, write what they need from you this week: room and a decision, or the plan and a check in. Act on both.
You've got it whenEach person got a different response and the same standard.
Home: Ask before answering
HowBefore your next correction at home, ask yourself out loud: what does this one need from me right now?
You've got it whenYour response was smaller than the one you had in mind.
Safety
Equine activities are inherently dangerous. This course does not replace hands-on instruction from a qualified professional. You work with horses at your own risk.
