Practice: The Four Phases
Chapter 7
Practice: The Four Phases
Two practices for the barn, two for the office or home. Write one line after each: what improved today was.
20 minPracticeBarn and office
The same work in two rooms. If you have no horse, watch horses at a fence or at a lesson; seeing is practice too. Do the office practices this week, with real people, at low volume.
Barn: Phase ladder
HowChoose one ask. Start at phase 1 and mean it. Escalate only as needed. The instant he tries, return to softness and neutral.
You've got it whenMore answers at phase 1 or 2 by the end of the session.
Office: A finger on the cell
HowRaise your next concern at phase 1: one quiet question, in passing, and walk on.
You've got it whenIt was fixed without a meeting.
Office: Pour the coffee
HowAfter your next phase 3 conversation, return within the hour with good morning and the next real work.
You've got it whenNo cold war. The work went on.
Home: Boundary, then warmth
HowHold one boundary at home, then return to warmth within minutes.
You've got it whenThe boundary held and the warmth came back fast.
Safety
Equine activities are inherently dangerous. This course does not replace hands-on instruction from a qualified professional. You work with horses at your own risk.
