Practice: Diagnose First, Respond Second
Chapter 8
Practice: Diagnose First, Respond Second
Two practices for the barn, two for the office or home. Write one line after each: what improved today was.
20 minPracticeBarn and office
The same work in two rooms. If you have no horse, watch horses at a fence or at a lesson; seeing is practice too. Do the office practices this week, with real people, at low volume.
Barn: Five questions at the gate
HowThe next time a horse resists, run the five questions in order before you respond.
You've got it whenYou stopped at the question that revealed the cause and wrote it down.
Barn: Take the saddle off
HowRun your hand down the topline of a horse you know, from wither to hip, and note any flinch. Report anything new to your vet or saddle fitter.
You've got it whenA baseline of normal, written down.
Office: No labels for a week
HowBan lazy, difficult and checked out from your vocabulary for a week. Replace each with confusion, fear or discomfort, and a question.
You've got it whenOne person told you something you didn't know.
Office: Five whys
HowTake one recurring problem and ask why five times. Change one variable only.
You've got it whenThe fifth answer was about the system, not the person.
Safety
Equine activities are inherently dangerous. This course does not replace hands-on instruction from a qualified professional. You work with horses at your own risk.
