Field guide: Peace That Has Structure
Chapter 5
Field guide: Peace That Has Structure
Every horse and every person asks: who is in charge here, and can I trust them? Predictability answers.

Where you will use it
- Onboarding, recurring meetings, handoffs and SOPs
- Bedtime, mornings, homework and the other rhythms of a home
Step by step
1
Do the same thing the same way
Same hand, same hole, same pause, same order. On Tuesday what you did on Monday.
2
Pair softness with structure
Softness without structure is mush. Structure without softness is the boss horse.
3
Stop being the weather
Warm Monday and cold Thursday teaches people to brace for weather. Find what only goes right when you are in the room.
4
Write the cinch down
An SOP is a cinch written down: the same hand, the same hole, the same pause, for whoever is on shift.
5
Respect the stages
Snaffle, hackamore, two rein, bridle: about seven years in the vaquero tradition. Nobody skips a stage.
Watch out
Roseabelle took the better part of a year. Structure has to be repeated long enough for a body to risk relaxing into it.
From the book
Test it: step away for a week. Did you build a system or a habit of being needed?
Peace is not the absence of pressure. It is the predictability of release.
