You build it before you ever climb on.

That’s what groundwork is — not a warm-up, not a chore — but a conversation that sets the tone for everything that follows.

It’s About the Mind Before the Movement

Too many people think groundwork is just about getting the horse to move their feet.

But movement without meaning is wasted energy.

Groundwork is how we shape:

If you don’t have the horse’s mind on the ground, you won’t have their body in the saddle.

Builds Mutual Trust and Awareness

A horse doesn't give you their trust just because you showed up with a halter.

  • You offer pressure without panic
  • You release at the right time
  • You listen, not just ask

Groundwork gives you time and space to prove who you are to them.

And in that process, the horse learns:

Develops Timing and Feel

The saddle hides a lot of mistakes.

The ground reveals them.

Groundwork gives you the chance to:

The principle underneath

Groundwork transfers to riding because the horse is learning a response to a cue, and a cue can be re-presented in a new context once the response is fluent. What does not transfer is anything the horse only ever performed under restraint. That is the practical content of the rule that if you cannot get it on the ground you will not get it in the saddle. You are not training a body, you are building responses that survive a change of context.
